Alfred A. Knopf was founded in 1915 and has long been known as a publisher of distinguished hardcover fiction and nonfiction. Its list of authors includes Toni Morrison, John Updike, Cormac McCarthy, Alice Munro, Anne Rice, Anne Tyler, Jane Smiley, Richard Ford, Julia Child, Peter Carey, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Michael Ondaatje, as well as such classic writers as Thomas Mann, Willa Cather, John Hersey, and John Cheever. We are currently seeking an Assistant to join Knopf's editorial team. The position provides an opportunity to support a VP and Senior Editor who works primarily in nonfiction, with a particular emphasis on deeply reported and well written work. The ideal candidate will be a strong writer, have a broad reading sensibility, and be able to efficiently manage a diverse set of responsibilities.
• Evaluating manuscripts and proposals
• Assisting with the coordination of the editorial and production process
• Writing catalog/flap copy
• Acting as a liaison between authors/agents and the editorial department
Additional requirements we are looking for include:
• An ability to engage critically with a wide array of nonfiction topics
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a high volume environment
• Ability to pay close attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
Salary for this position is $40,000. Full-time employees are eligible for our comprehensive benefits program.
