Avery, a nonfiction imprint of Penguin Random House, is looking for a Senior Editor to join our team. Avery specializes in books by renowned experts, researchers, thought leaders, and influencers in the categories of health, wellness, psychology, self-improvement, business, parenting, science, and cooking. We are looking for a Senior Editor with a keen editorial eye and industry awareness, as well as a strong interest in groundbreaking nonfiction titles with a distinct message and prescriptive takeaways. In this role, the Senior Editor will acquire, shape, position, and successfully publish approximately 10 titles per year in Avery’s core categories of health, wellness, psychology, and self-help. The position involves communicating closely with authors and agents, and working with a dynamic, highly collaborative in-house publishing team.

The Role:

• Acquiring, editing, and overseeing the publication of approximately 10 nonfiction books per year

• Communicating with authors and agents in all phases of the publishing process, from acquisition to on-sale date and beyond

• Developing strong working relationships with Managing Editorial, Production, Art, and other essential in-house departments

• Following cultural and industry trends in order to evaluate potential projects and identify new opportunities

• Presenting titles at launch meetings

• Overseeing all editorial aspects of book development, including manuscript development and copy writing including jacket copy, metadata, and other marketing copy as required

• Effectively representing the Avery imprint to potential authors and agents

The Essentials:

• Minimum of 4 years of publishing experience in editorial acquisitions for a general trade publisher with a genuine interest in nonfiction and an understanding of book trends in health, wellness, psychology, and self-help space

• Strong contacts in the agent community

• Strong editing capabilities and ease with navigating authors through the editing process

• Proven ability to manage deadlines and problem solve

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Timely follow-up and organizational skills

• Proven ability to set priorities under pressure and multi-task effectively

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Teams, etc.

The salary range for this position is $78,000 - $85,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.

The salary range listed is specific to each particular open position and takes into account various factors including the specifics of the individual role, and candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
